Abstract:
Colonisation is a key process for population genetics, phylogeography, speciation and metapopulation biology. Here I propose to investigate evolutionary processes during colonisation using rotifers, organisms with exceptional experimental features. I will test the effects and interactions of interbreeding, migration and local adaptation in the genetic structure of young populations. Laboratory populations founded from different number of propagules, and under several migration regimes will be subject to a number of population cycles. Fitness components will be followed and molecular markers used to assess population structure. The results will be relevant for the management of biodiversity in the context of climate change and human impacts.
