- Abstract:
- The ocean is absorbing a large amount of the antrophogenic CO2 emissions. As a consequence, the pH and carbonate supersaturation of the ocean is changing to values which have been rare exceptions in the geological record of the last 300 Myrs. Marine carbonate producers, such as corals, coccoliths, and planktic foraminifers respond to these changes with reduced calcification in laboratory experiments. Understanding of calcification processes is crucial to the accuracy of predictions of the impact of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. This proposal will determine the changes in foraminiferal carbonate production during the last 100 Myrs and constrain the environmental conditions which are prerequisites for high calcification. Investigating extreme events will help to understand the relevance of foraminiferal calcification on the recovery of the ocean from elevated CO2 levels.
