Abstract:
Understanding why and how variation of immune defence levels in hosts is maintained can play a pivotal role in areas such as public health, vaccine development, agro-ecology and conservation biology. Combining two major concepts of Evolutionary Ecology I will study how host-parasite coevolution and the costs of immune defence influence the evolution of immune defence levels. Using sympatric and allopatric freshwater gammarids and their acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis as a study system I will (i) examine whether host-parasite coevolution affects the host's immune defence efficacy, (ii) investigate the fitness costs and benefits associated with various levels of immune defence taking in account host-parasite coevolution.
