- Increased habitat exploitation and global travel mean that emerging infectious diseases are one of the greatest threats to human health and well-being. In addition the rapid turnover rates of parasites and the strong selection pressures they face mean they can quickly evolve to overcome our efforts to suppress them. It is therefore essential to understand the biological mechanisms underlying parasite persistence in order to predict how to control them. I will develop models of parasite evolution to consider their interactions in a community consisting of multiple host and parasite species. These models will allow us to predict which parasites pose the greatest threat and how best to control them in the face of parasite evolution.
