Abstract:
The geodynamo, which generates the Earth's magnetic field in the liquid outer core, is still poorly understood. Novel statistical techniques from Complexity Theory, applied to global geomagnetic secular variation, can determine whether this system is self-organised (critically poised just below the edge of chaos), rather than chaotic (as hitherto assumed in numerical simulations). If so, the self-organised dynamics recently found in the paleomagnetic reversal record would extend to the timescale of core flow, imposing strong, quantified, spatio-temporal constraints on future dynamo modelling, and providing a theoretical basis for integrating the main geomagnetic subdisciplines.
