- Abstract:
- This project will use molecular techniques to reconstruct the coevolutionary history of three groups of seabirds and their parasitic lice. Because seabirds host a variety of different lineages of louse, we will be able to test whether these lineages have responded to the evolution of their hosts in the same way. Some kinds of seabird (such as albatrosses and petrels) have more lice than others (such as gulls). We will we test whether 'intrinsic factors' such as body size or metabolic rate, and 'extrinsic' factors such as evolutionary tree shape can predict how many louse species a bird has, and the degree to which that bird and its louse fauna have speciated together (cospeciation). Evolutionary trees will also be used to test whether all the species of louse on the same bird share a recent common ancestor, or whether the lice are distant relatives. This research will led to a greater understanding of the factors involved in the evolution of host-parasite assemblages.
