Abstract:
The role of spatial structure is emerging as one of the central issues of modem population ecology. The development of spatial theory - driven in large part by advances in computing and analytical techniques - has not however, been matched by a corresponding growth m replicated empirical studies. This proposal seeks funding to carry out one of the first replicated studies where the spatial characteristics of a population are altered and the effects on population dynamics examined. Replicated host and host/parasite microcosms will be established with different spatial structures and the populations assayed over a period of two years. The results will be compared to the predictions of theory and used to guide the development of subsequent theory by the PI.
