Abstract:
This project will investigate the physical oceanographic processes occurring beneath ice shelves, the interaction between the polar ocean and the underside of the shelves, and their role in determining the mass balance of the ice shelves and the larger-scale oceanic conditions. This will be achieved by a series of Autosub missions completing a set of boxes, closed by simultaneous ship-based measurements. Hydrographic observations will be complemented by the first measurements of oxygen isotopes in sea water beneath ice shelves. The boxes will be used in an inverse analysis of the region to determine physical exchanges between the different water masses and the ice shelf.
