- Abstract:
- ODP Legs 190/196, Nankai Trough, are aimed at resolving fundamental problems concerning hydromechanical processes at a plate margin dominated by terrigenous clastic sediments. A gas-probe permeameter on Leg 190 will provide direct shipboard measurements of permeability variations in quite unprecented quantity and detail. Funding is sought primarily for a PhD studentship to integrate these permeability data with physical properties of the cores and, eventually, with LWD data from Leg 196. The data will be calibrated and expanded upon by laboratory tests on whole round cores at varying fluid pressures. Directional Hg-porosimetry and image analysis will be used to determine the factors that control the differing flow paths. The topic is well defined, international, and involves potentially very versatile new technologies, thus forming an ideal PhD project. The results may well be a centrepiece of the Nankai drilling results and a valuable UK springboard into the impending SEIZE programme.
