Abstract:
Two moorings will be deployed on and off shelf NW of South Georgia to record water-column acoustic backscatter, current velocity, temperature and salinity over a 2 year period. They will provide daily estimates of Antarctic krill abundance and concomitant data on prevailing oceanographic condition. The moorings will enable a) the within year changes in krill abundance implied by existing predator data to be measured directly, b) tidal components to be derived, c) the hypothesis that krill immigration to the island is mediated directly by the influx of cord waters to be tested, and d) short term functional responses of predators to changing prey availability to be quantified. Present restrictions to sample by ship during short periods in summer only currently prevent these data from being gathered, hindering understanding of ecosystem function at South Georgia.
