Abstract:
A new approach to the study of humic materials and associated trace elements has recently revealed important information about Mn speciation in sediment porewaters. The proposed work will develop this further in an investigation of trace element geochemistry in complex organic-rich lake sediments and will use tangential flow ultrafiltration to separate organic matter in large, medium and small colloidal size fractions, gel electrophoresis to separate the humic material on the basis of size/charge, and ICP-OES and -MS to quantify trace element concentrations in colloidal/truly dissolved size fractions and in electrophoretically separated humic fractions. Inclusion of redox-sensitive elements such as As will facilitate the extension of the work on lake sediments to investigate the true nature of arsenic/iron/humic interactions in waters for human consumption.
