Abstract:
This project will employ a Cellular Automaton model to provide a quantitative framework for reconstructing past sediment production based on contemporary landforms and evidence for landform change. The approach involves the simulation of alluvial fan formation under a range of sediment supply scenarios and comparison of the simulated fan morphology with fan characteristics derived in the field and by OSL and air-photo based dating. Comparison will address: first, the issue of equifinality, by identifying the ability of different morphological parameters and methods of analysis to discriminate between output associated with differing boundary conditions; and, second, the relative likelihood that different boundary condition scenarios are responsible for contemporary fan morphology, by analysing model output within an uncertainty framework.
