Abstract:
We propose to test the predictions of a recently published model relating diving behaviour of marine mammals to variability in prey patch quality. We will monitor changes in dive behaviour of grey seals in response to changes in prey density, foraging costs and dive depth in a purpose built captive animal facility. We will take advantage of a unique experimental protocol developed during a EU funded Marie Curie grant which allows presentation and manipulation of realistic foraging conditions and provides simultaneous measures of metabolic cost. The results will be used to test and modify diving models and provide a framework for analysis of natural diving behaviour to assess foraging success.
