Abstract:
The negative relationship between population growth rate (pgr) and population density is at the heart of population ecology. Given its fundamental importance, it is surprising that data on the form of the dependence of pgr on density has only rarely been plotted out and analysed. Here we propose a thorough analysis of the recently compiled CPB/NCEAS Global Population Dynamics Database (GPDD), much the largest collection of population data in the world. In addition to analysing the GPDD data base we will test the predictions of Fowler (1981) that concave-up relationships between pgr and density are to be expected for species with life histories like those of fish and insects, concave-down relationships for large mammals.
