- Abstract:
- Quantitative estimates of the strength and form of selection can provide important insights into evolution. However, few studies have attempted to measure the overall strength and form of sexual selection on both males and females in natural populations. It has been proposed that female Empid flies use male nuptial gift size as a measure of male quality, but previous studies (using a species with a symbolic gift) have demonstrated stabilizing selection. Also, where sex role reversal is predominant males have been shown to base their choice on female abdomen area. We propose quantifying the form, strength and opportunity for sexual selection on males and females of R. sulcata, a species that demonstrate resource based polygyny and a tendency for sex role reversal.
