- Rocks are deformed in natural processes of mountain building, formation and evolution of sedimentary basins and in processes leading to earthquakes, and also in the exploitation of natural resources. Most experimental studies of rock deformation are carried out under conditions where there is no accompanying chemical or crystallographic change, although it is clear that deformation during mountain building or in the production of some types of earthquake involves such changes. We propose to investigate systematically the ways in which the strength and ductility (whether the material flows or fractures) of a rock (serpentinite) evolves during its dehydration reaction to olivine + talc + water at around 500 deg.C.. This is a relatively manageable reaction, that will provide insight into the behaviour of other mineral systems. There is a large volume change of the solid phases, and hence the potential for the creation of porosity, which in turn is expected to render the rock transiently weak as the pore spaces subsequently collapse during deformation. Weakening is also expected as the reaction proceeds under stress, owing to the formation of ultrafine-grained reaction products, that tend to be weak and ductile at high temperatures. After mapping out the ways in which syndeformational chemical changes influence the deformation of this rock, we will seek to apply the results to further understanding of synmetamorphic flow and fracture of rocks in nature.
