Abstract:
Recent studies show that high Rayleigh number convection undergoes a transition from a plume-like to a puff-like character due to interactions between the flow and buoyancy source. This transition is of overwhelming importance for convection in the atmosphere and oceans. This study will explore the mechanisms and nonlinear dynamics responsible for this transition. It will combine experimental, analytical and numerical approaches to explore a variety of situations. In particular, we will study the convection above localised time-dependent sources, over distributed sources where the buoyancy flux is modulated in space and time under external control, and flows where there is a dynamic feedback between the fluid motion and available heat flux.
