- Abstract:
- We have recently generated pilot study data which convincingly demonstrate, for the first time, that cross-matching of marine sclerochronological records is possible using the long-lived clam Arctica islandica. This breakthrough potentially enables a calibration of the temporal changes in the marine reservoir effect and the generation of ultra-high-resolution geochemical proxy records of bottom water temperature and salinity. We seek funding 1) to undertake annual growth-band analysis of Arctica shells and to construct a cross-matched annual time-series to cover at least the last 1000 years, 2) to use this absolute chronology to date independently (to a calendar year) Arctica growth increments that can then be used to calibrate the 14C reservoir effect, and 3) to produce a detailed 14C reservoir history for the last 1000 years for the northern North Sea.
