- Abstract:
- The aim is to investigate two essential questions concerning the Amazon Rainforest, why is it so diverse and will it survive global warming? To answer these questions we propose using 3 very different vegetation models, BIOME, SDGVM and TRIFFID to predict the structure, extent and productivity of the Amazon rainforest for three scenarios: 1) Future, to test the Cox et al (2000) assertion that significant amounts of rainforest will be replaced by savannah by 2050, releasing stored carbon and accelerating global warming, 2) Last Glacial Maximum to test the 'canopy-density refuge hypothesis' of the origin of the immense diversity of the rainforest suggested by Cowling et al (2001) and 3) Miocene (last greenhouse period) scenarios to provide an analogue to future climate s well as examining the influence of the evolution of C3 and C4 competition on modern rainforest diversity.
