Abstract:
Following recent advances in theory and experimental methods, it has become possible to generate quantitative descriptions of anomalies in elastic constants associated with phase transitions in minerals. The magnitudes of such anomalies can be dramatic, with implications for both physical and chemical properties. A systematic investigation of the anomalous elastic properties of minerals due to a variety of phase transition mechanisms is proposed. Using elasticity measurements obtained under ambient conditions, and in situ at high pressures or at high temperature, Landau theory will be tested as an appropriate theoretical framework for describing the elastic behaviour near to phase transitions and over P, T and composition ranges well away from transition points.
