- Abstract:
- There is currently uncertainty as to the origin of oxidised chlorine species detected in the marine boundary layer. Several mechanisms have been proposed using 'classical' gas and aqueous phase chemistry for Cl release from sea-salt, but none of these suggested sources can explain the high chlorine concentrations that have been observed. Experimental and theoretical studies of the effect of ion-enhanced interfacial reactions on the chemistry of aqueous NaCl aerosols have revealed a possible solution to this disparity. In the proposed programme of work we will conduct experimental studies to determine the kinetic and mechanistic details of this process, in order to quantify the Cl source.
