Abstract:
ATSC adverts will highlight efforts to promote inclusivity and encourage applications from under-represented equality groups. All staff have received DEI and unconscious bias training in their home institutions within the last three years and are cognisant of the barriers to advancement for under-represented groups in the earth sciences. Applications will besought from all UK-based EES departments directly in addition to existing DTP schemes to ensure complete coverage of the UK PhD student and ECR community. The maximum possible time will be allowed for applications to ensure awareness for applicants on extended periods of absence (e.g. parental/sick leave). Applications will be anonymised and scored based on demonstrated scientific need and suitability of the research projects. Anonymised scored applications will then be discussed amongst the investigators and successful applicants shortlisted. This will be detailed in the advertising for the ATSC. A supplementary hardship fund will be made available for shortlisted applicants that would otherwise not be able to attend (e.g. self-funded PhDs, those with limited T&S from funding source). This course aims to increase participation from part-time students, who are likely to be under-represented in one or more equality groups as well as having an increased likelihood of having caring or P/T working responsibilities
