Abstract:
The Centre for Water, Environment, Sustainability and Public Health (the 'Centre') at the University of Strathclyde will manage the NERC 'Discipline Hopping (DH) for Discovery Science' award. The Centre leads fundamental and applied research, providing novel solutions to the most pressing global challenges. It led Strathclyde's NERC highly successful 'Discipline Hopping for Environmental Solutions' award in 2021-22, and the NERC 'Changing the Environment' bid in 2020. The Centre is therefore ideally placed to lead this DH for Discovery Science initiative for the University. It will deploy its expertise and agility to facilitate new interdisciplinary alliances and collaborations across the University and its partners. The Centre will execute an internal call for funding for DH activities in areas that support the discovery science agenda. These activities will be designed to support: ? 'rapid response' secondments for applicants to spend time embedded in centres/departments or with partners/end users in other disciplines to encourage the exploration of interdisciplinary ideas and novel methods - providing an interdisciplinary intellectual playground ? 'impact champions' to help drive new interdisciplinary collaborations and impact outcomes ? interdisciplinary 'bridging the gap' workshops/meetings/seminars/webinars that cross departments and functions to share learning, new concepts, and complex systems and tools towards the development of cutting-edge discovery science ? training events to share skills and perspectives across disciplines with a common goal ? innovation 'pump-priming' engagement events with UKRI-eligible research partners/end users to support the development of new whole-systems approaches (e.g. proof of concept) It will be the responsibility of the Centre to deliver flexible funding to enable interactions that cross traditional disciplines and to build communities across NERC's remit.
