- Abstract:
- Research questions: How do Mcfarlane Notman's photographs of the 1901 royal tour of Canada project an imperial vision of European authority and ownership of the landscape? How do Mcfarlane Notman's photographs of Indigenous peoples contribute to - or destabilise - an imagining of Canada as a reproduction of imperial Britain? Who were the intended audiences of Mcfarlane Notman's photographs, and how do their publication contexts shape their meaning as colonial artifacts? Project objectives: To generate new research on an as yet unexamined part of the Notman collection at the McCord Museum To use my findings to contribute to methodologies related to decolonising archives and cultural institutions To write an academic paper on my findings, and present an initial version of it at McGill To disseminate my research beyond the academy, via a blog post, talk or other medium as agreed with McGill and the McCord Museum To work with McGill and the McCord Museum to use the photographs as the basis for community engagement activities that bring Canadian citizens in closer contact with the collections.
