- Abstract:
- The Envision-2 DTP will develop doctoral researchers capable of leading world-class research to deliver knowledge, innovation, influence and opportunity. It will meet the urgent need to grow UK science's environmental and economic impact. Envision aspires to develop the next generation of environmental leaders with targeted and wider skills to engage with evidence and critical thinking that has a profound impact in the UK and globally. Global challenges address the major threats to human wellbeing and equality of opportunity. The UN has identified 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets to be solved. "They are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blue print for success" (Ban-Ki Moon); many relate to important components of environmental change, and the urgent need to mitigate the effects of human activity on the wider environment and biodiversity whilst improving human lives and prospects for peace and happiness. The UK's Industrial Strategy sets out to develop the world's most innovative economy to boost productivity and earning power. The linked UK Clean Growth Strategy promises to combine economic growth and environmental security with a reduced dependency on carbon fuels. Both present a major need for advanced skills. Envision-2's research and world-class multidisciplinary training will be instrumental in delivery of these goals. Our impact will occur through the generation of key new evidence and skills leading to the development of a 'next generation' of ideas and solutions to tackle the SDGs and foster knowledge-based industries that underpin innovation. Hosting Partners - The Envision-2 DTP is led from Lancaster University with the Universities of Bangor and Nottingham plus the British Geological Survey, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and Rothamsted Research. This 6-host partnership offers a resonant mix of NERC-remit scientific expertise and achievement from Ecology and Evolution to Renewable Natural Resources and Energy. The ambition of the HEIs is to work with partner RIs to offer a fully multidisciplinary PhD training environment. Research Excellence - Over 600 academics and researchers are supported by 'state-of-the-art' infrastructure and continued investment in world leading research groups (with 137 new academic appointments) resulting in 174 current NERC grants (#6.98M) and 208 environmental science papers in Nature group/Science/PNAS journals since 2013. Our research and training is themed into environmental change, natural resources and risks and hazards. Training Excellence - Envision DTP partners host over 40 DTPs and 800 PhD students. We have a track record in offering flexible, co-designed and co-located HEI-RI PhD training opportunities. Envision-2 will innovate with new approaches to PGR training offering choice and flexibility to individual PhD students whilst ensuring full cohort experiences through annual Summer Conferences, advanced Multidisciplinary Masterclasses, an Online Training Portal and Research and Training Colleges. Collaborative Partners - Envision-2 has over 60 collaborative partners from across sectors who support PhD student training in diverse ways including co-designing research and training, substantial 'in-kind' support for fieldwork and laboratory placements, co-delivering skills, impact and engagement training, and providing placements and networking. Impact and Legacy - This NERC DTP offers an opportunity for novel and timely development of PhD graduates attuned to end-user needs, with research and transferable skills, ready and able to work in multidisciplinary research environments to address complex global challenges. We will encourage our students to broaden their perspectives and consider opportunities beyond academic research across sectors and internationally. We will influence associated PhD students through access to Envision training opportunities. We will also ensure a legacy of new discovery and scientific wisdom.
