- Abstract:
- CENTA2 will provide an innovative, high quality and comprehensive training programme to equip our Doctoral Researchers (DRs) with knowledge, skills, and expertise to identify and address complex environmental challenges and cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Excellence in research, directly informed by knowledge exchange with end-users, will underpin a multidisciplinary training environment that will support the development of skilled scientists to benefit future science, policy and the economy, thus supporting the delivery of the Industrial Strategy. Six pillars underpin the transformative nature of CENTA2: 1) A unique framework of end-user involvement throughout DTP design and delivery: 19 external partners ranging from industry to non-governmental organisations and governmental agencies support a coordinated and systematic approach to end-user input and benefit, providing CENTA2 with an in-kind funding contribution of ~#3m. Our collaborative end-user partners have contributed to the strategic development of CENTA2, and will contribute to the design, creation and delivery of training in an innovative engagement hierarchy. This ranges from contributions to CENTA2 structure (DTP strategy, DR project and student selection, co-supervision, providing space for DR students, and training delivery) to supporting individual studentships through CASE awards and other collaborative links, to offering placements to provide experience outside academia. 2) A flexible approach to project design: DR research projects may be co-developed by DRs, end-users and our NERC-remit researchers. Projects that meet specific excellence criteria in terms of multidisciplinarity, co-development and/or supervisory diversity will be badged as 'Flagship' to enhance the novelty, breadth and diversity of our project base. 3) DR skills development: Founded on our research excellence and end-user input, our DRs will increase their subject-specific, interdisciplinary, and employability skills (e.g. communication, teamwork, commercial awareness, analytical, entrepreneurial). This will be supported by our innovative Training Credit and DR Passport schemes underpinned by Supervisor Registration. Core to the Researcher Passport are initial and regular Training Needs Assessments, a training record and DR-owned training provision planning, which will enable our DRs to evaluate and reflect on their training and provide an evidenced basis for future career planning. 4) Progressive training framework: Our multi-disciplinary training programme is based on a 3-stage framework that provides flexible and tailored training for both full- and part-time DRs: - Foundation level modules will provide core provision of theory, skills and analytical techniques; - Masterclass level modules will cover advanced training and more specialised topics; - Project level modules (e.g. Speed PhD week, Environmental Scrums; Challenge Weeks, Work Placements), situating DRs in multidisciplinary project teams, addressing real world problems. 5) A robust operational model: Action Panels (Training Development, Student and Project Selection and End-user Interaction), each with clearly defined tasks, remits and reporting mechanisms, will be overseen by a Management Board who will facilitate efficient programme management, provide comprehensive monitoring and quality assurance systems and ensure effective communication with DRs, with end-users and partners across the DTP and with NERC. 6) A lasting legacy: Via an Impact Alliance with other doctoral training programmes, CENTA2 will create a substantial network of expertise and algorithms of DR training delivery, contributing to our long-lasting legacy. CENTA2 will realise key elements of NERC's 'Business of the Environment' strategy, by creating a partnership across science, business, government, and civil society to co-design and co-deliver cutting edge research, and the environmental scientists of the future.
