- Abstract:
- The NPIF training grant scholarships will be part of the cohort recruited as part of the Leeds/York NERC DTP (SPHERES) which recruits up to 28 PhD candidates annually. PhD candidates have access to a wide variety of training opportunities provided by the DTP, the universities partnered in the DTP, the contributing schools, the individual supervisors and external providers. The training consists of a mix of subject specific and project specific training as well as general skills training. Training changes throughout the candidature dependent on the required skills, e.g. general research skills in year 1 towards career skills towards the final year. Training needs for each postgraduate researcher (PGR) is defined each year in close discussion between the PGR and the supervisory team. The DTP provides multi-disciplinary training opportunities throughout the candidature and DTP PGRs are required to take part in training events that are outside of their general research areas (e.g. as part of the cross discipline sphere days targeting the geosphere, atmoshphere and biosphere). For the NPIF training grant scholarships the DTP invited research projects from the contributing partners that align with the National Productivity agenda and have relevant industry partners contributing to the scholarship at, at least, CASE level. The DTP was able to built on a wide range of CASE proposal that was submitted for the annual competition. PhD training in close collaboration with industry partners offers wider training opportunities to PhD candidates and provides direct impact for the provided funding. The successful candidates will work closely with world-leading academics and relevant industry based supervisors.
