Abstract:
The focus of these workshops is on understanding uncertainty and is therefore useful in almost every subject area across the environmental modelling domain, from the physical science of weather, hydrology and natural hazards to biological topics such as ecological modelling. We ran this workshop in January 2014 under the previous Advanced Training call, from which we gathered a lot of excellent feedback as well as some useful suggestions for small improvements, such as bringing the poster session forward to Day 1. As the January workshop was so oversubscribed (more than 130 applicants for 27 places), we are applying to hold three workshops this time rather than one to meet this demand (as well as any new/additional from NERC researchers). In order to gain maximum benefit from these three workshops we plan to host one for London-based researchers (no accommodation or travel costs required), one with a climate/weather theme, and one with an ecological modelling theme (inviting an additional guest lecturer from that field). The impact of this training will be to increase the confidence of early-career researchers in environmental modelling to embrace and engage with uncertainty in their work, rather than treating it as an inconvenient statistical bolt-on. Participants will leave with an overview of current debate on uncertainty in modelling, understanding of how this affects their own research methods and output, and an understanding of where to find expert guidance and information on methodologies. Discussion and practical exercises on the communication of results and their limitations in a format suitable for decisionmakers was also a particularly well-received aspect of the previous workshop which we will repeat, and we have added, by request, a longer practical exercise which will be themed towards the interests of participants. The workshops will be led by CATS' experts in modelling methods, namely Professor Leonard Smith, Professor Keith Beven (CATS Visiting Professor), Dr David Stainforth, and Dr Erica Thompson. We will also invite a high-profile speaker in the field of biology/ecology for the third workshop.
