Abstract:
Chlorinated solvents have been, and continue to be, used in large quantities and account for a large proportion of groundwater pollution incidents. This contributes to significant degradation of UK groundwater resources. Traditional remediation techniques are prohibitive in terms of duration and cost, therefore novel remedies are required to address this widespread problem. Under anaerobic conditions, dehalorespiring bacteria use chlorinated ethenes as terminal electron acceptors for respiration. This metabolism (reductive dechlorination) results in step-wise removal of chlorine atoms from the molecule, ultimately to yield ethane, and can be used in bioremediation. The overall hypothesis to be tested in the SABRE project is that enhanced anaerobic bioremediation using reductive dechlorination can result in the effective treatment of chlorinated solvent DNAPL source areas. This will be the first scientifically robust development and demonstration of in situ bioremediation of a chlorinated solvent source zone.
