- The UK currently faces, like all other highly industrialized nations, a substantial legacy of contaminated land and water. Contaminated groundwater has significant financial, human health, and sustainability implications for society. Toxic, and potentially carcinogenic, industrial chemicals, such as chlorinated solvents, have been used in large quantities and account for a large proportion of groundwater pollution incidents. Successful restoration of groundwater resources beneath such contaminated sites depends on our understanding of the fundamental processes governing the movement of water and chemicals in the soil. Physics and chemistry both play important roles in groundwater contamination scenarios; however, to date, each has primarily been studied in isolation from the another. The interaction between physical and chemical process in chlorinated solvent releases at the centimetre scale is largely unknown. And yet we commonly employ computer models that need such information to make accurate predictions concerning site evaluation and remediation outcomes. In this project, the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with the Contaminated Land Assessment and Remediation Research Centre (CLARRC), will measure key relationships at the interface of physical and chemical processes at the centimetre scale. In doing so, the work will endeavour to illuminate the scientific mechanisms that govern the interaction of hazardous chemicals and groundwater in soil. It will also examine the implications of the knowledge acquired on groundwater pollution at the practical scale of interest to site owners, regulators, consultants, and the public.
