Abstract:
The project aims to develop an innovative framework for retrieving forest canopy structure and aboveground biomass with improved accuracy from multi-wavelength polarimetric SAR interferometry. Height profiles from the wavelength and polarisation-dependent scattering phase centres and the contribution of basic scattering mechanisms derived from polarimetric decomposition theorems will be combined with results from a coherent microwave model. Airborne E-SAR, spaceborne SIR-C images and anechoic chamber measurements will serve as datasets. The new retrieval algorithms will be used to assess options for spaceborne SAR missions in the ESA Earth Explorer programme in collaboration with BAE SYSTEMS. We will also evaluate small, lightweight chaser satellites orbiting behind ENVISAT or ALOS, and data integration with complementary EO techniques, such as LIDAR.
