Abstract:
Land contamination by non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLS), such as aviation fuel and diesel, pose serious environmental, groundwater and public health problems throughout the industrial and developing world. A number of non-invasive geophysical techniques have been successful in locating and mapping contamination events but have been limited in their ability to quantify the nature of the pollutant. Through the use of high-precision, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) modelling methods and sophisticated dielectric material analysis techniques, this project will investigate the use, effectiveness and practical feasibility of GPR attribute methods in the assessment of NAPL contamination events.
