Abstract:
To provide computing hardware for the development of techniques for uncertainty estimation in a wide variety of environmental modelling applications. Methodological issues to be addressed will include GRID middleware for the dynamic control of processors and the evaluation of complex response surfaces, the use of different likelihood measures in model evaluation and techniques for sensitivity analysis and improving efficiency of sampling. Application areas to be addressed include broad scale distributed uncertainty in coupled atmospheric and hydrological prediction of flood inundation, geochemical predictions, prediction of human impacts on phytoplankton populations, groundwater capture zones, volcanic processes, dispersion of persistent organic pollutants, and applications of CFD in natural river reaches. The facility will also support work on the use of scientific uncertainty in decision making and policy formulation.
