- Abstract:
- Bars are the fundamental morphological units in gravel-bed rivers. The non-uniform flow around and over them has major implications ranging from greater aquatic habitat diversity to erosion/deposition problems and aggravation of local flood risk. Yet predictive modelling of bar morphology and surface texture, and how they evolve during floods, is poorly developed. We will modify a 2-D flow and sediment routing model previously used in sand-bed rivers to simulate the dynamics of bars in Fraser River, Canada, for which we have detailed setup and test data through our ongoing collaboration with scientists at UBC. We will investigate alternative bedload transport algorithms, and simulate and test firstly bar dynamics in short periods of steady high flow, then bar evolution during seasonal high flow.
