Abstract:
Global and regional precipitation trends are key climate change indicators. Absence of long-term data from most ocean (and some land) areas has precluded global-scale analyses of precipitation trends. A methodology for the reconstruction of gaps in gauge-based grids of monthly precipitation will be developed and validated. Empirical Orthogonal Functions will be defined using satellite-based reconstructions for the period 1979-2001 and fitted to available gauge data to reconstruct precipitation from early in the 20th century. The methodology will be evaluated via application to precipitation fields from NCEP re-analysis and HadAM2 C20C simulations and by using cross-validation in the calibration period. The reconstructed precipitation fields will be analysed for trends and coupled land-ocean modes of variability.
