Abstract:
The composition and softness of temperate glacier ice vary spatially, but in an unknown manner. The effects of such variations are thereby excluded from ice flow models, reducing their ability to predict valley glacier response to future climate change. In this project we will integrate field radar data with laboratory measurements of ice crystallography, water content, vein water composition and time-domain reflectometry to reconstruct the 3-d physical structure of a temperate glacier. Systematic spatial variations in this structure will then be compared with the glacier's 3-d velocity field to tune a rheologically-distributed numerical model of ice flow. Finally, we will develop a scheme to allow all such models to evolve their own softness fields by expressing recorded spatial variations in ice properties in terms of their large-scale glaciological controls.
