Abstract:
Bioassay experiments to assess N-, P- and Fe-limitation of phytoplankton growth, photosynthesis and N2 fixation will be undertaken in the tropical North Atlantic as part of Meteor Cruise 55 (October-November 2002). The cruise track is from west to east along 11 degrees N. The response of the photophysiology of the phytoplankton community will be assessed using fast repetition rate fluorescence and 14C assimilation, the net growth responses of Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus and small eukaryotic phytoplankton populations will be assessed using analytical flow cytometry, and the response of nitrogen fixation will be assessed using 15N-dinitrogen assimilation. We will assess whether different physiology processes (N-fixation vs photosynthesis) and different phytoplankton taxa (Synechococcus vs Prochlorococcus vs small eukaryotes) are limited by different nutrients.
