- Abstract:
- The size of the meridional overturning in the Indian Ocean is a primary issue in large-scale ocean circulation. We propose here to make a transindian hydrographic section across the Indian Ocean at 32 degrees S to measure the overturning. We will use standard hydrographic measurements plus new direct velocity techniques to define the circulation. Following the cruise, we will estimate the size of the overturning and associated upwelling in the Indian Ocean; compare the observed circulation with models of Indian Ocean circulation; and determine the meridional fluxes of heat, freshwater and nutrients across 32 degrees S. We also propose to make CO2 and organic nitrogen measurements in order to define the carbon flux across 32 degrees S and the overall amount of outgassing of CO2 in the Indian Ocean and to estimate the role of organics in the meridional transport of total nitrogen for the first time.
