Abstract:
Our aim is to obtain measurements of the full directional wavenumber frequency spectrum from the power spectrum of HF radar backscatter from the ocean surface. At present we are limited to the measurement of the directional wavenumber or frequency spectrum and have identified problems in high sea states which may be due to Doppler shifting of short waves by the orbital velocities of long waves, a factor that is not accounted for in the scattering theory used for the measurements. If we are successful the results will provide important insights into the Doppler shifting mechanism with direct applications to the interpretation of data from SAR and other imaging radars. Implementation of the full solution in real time is likely to be impractical so an alternative approximate approach will be investigated.
