- Abstract:
- We will examine the contribution to atmospheric CH4 from estuaries and shallow gas seeps. This will involve studies of CH4 concentrations, benthic and sea-air fluxes (incl bubble transport), CH4 oxidation rates, source-sink distributions based on stable isotopes, and echo sounder data. The highly detailed observations arising from this project will make a major contribution to constraining coastal CH4 fluxes globally. We will develop a GIS database of CH4 sources around the UK coastline, suitable for global extrapolation on the basis of available observations for other regions. Our outputs will enable a clearer definition of the impact of such regions on the atmospheric CH4 budget, information that will inform global climate models.
